Role of the Governing Body

Information about Your School Governors

Governing bodies are responsible and accountable for all major decisions about the school and its future. The governing body has a legal responsibility to conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. It has specific Statutory Responsibilities and its main tasks are:
  • To offer a strategic view of the work of the school
  • To support and challenge
  • To hold the school to account for the standard and quality of education it achieves.
  • To deliver effectively by working as a team to plan, monitor and evaluate.
  • Appointing the head teacher
Structure of Governing Body
The Governors carry out their duties in a variety of ways. There are two full Governing Body meetings each term at which issues are discussed and decisions made. Much of the work, however, is carried out by the committees attached to the Governing Body, which normally meet twice a term. There are three committees:
  • Finance, Personnel and Premises Committee (with a Buildings sub-committee attached to this)
  • Welfare
  • Curriculum
Each of these committees look at their aspect of the school’s operation, reporting back their recommendations to the Governing Body. The Headteacher and Chair of Governors are members of all the committees.

In addition, there is an Admissions Panel which meets as and when required.

A clerk to the Governing Body is appointed to provide administrative support to the governors, primarily helping with Full Governor Body meetings and working closely with the Chair or Governors.

Information Sharing
If you wish to know more about the issues the Governing Body are considering, all parents and staff are entitled to look at the approved minutes of the Full Governing Body and Committees, which are kept in a file in the school office.
