As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, as part of Book Week, children have the opportunity to dress up as their favourite book character. If you would like your child to participate in this event they are welcome to come to school tomorrow,  Friday 14th November in costume. Thank you for your support.

Inset Day, Monday 17 November, Saints Football 8.30am-2pm
Unfortunately, only one person has expressed interest in the Saints’ Football Day next Monday and therefore they have no choice other than to cancel the event.

Anti-bullying Week – Tuesday 18th – Friday 21st November
Next week will be Anti-Bullying Week and we will be spending the week focusing on friendships, kindness and what children can do if they feel they are being bullied. One of the key issues that schools find when incidents of bullying take place is that children have not shared their worries or concerns with adults which means they continue to happen. The key messages we will be sharing with the children are the importance of telling adults in school as soon as incidents occur and helping each other, so if we feel other people are being bullied we tell adults on their behalf. We will also be explaining the procedures we have in place so “telling,¿ can be done anonymously. We would be grateful if you could help us impart this message to the children and talk to them during and at the end of the week to ensure they are familiar with these processes should they ever need to use them.

Samaritan’s Purse, Operation Christmas Child shoe box appeal
Reminder: the deadline for bringing in your filled shoe box, if you have not yet done so, is next Tuesday morning 18th November.

Remembrance Day
The Royal British Legion would like to say a big thank you to everyone who made a donation and bought a poppy for this very worthwhile charity.

School Uniform
From September 2009 we will be amending our uniform slightly to add more uniformity.

Currently our winter uniform consists of a navy blue school sweatshirt or cardigan with the school logo on  and a pale blue or white polo shirt or blouse. From September 2009 white blouses and white polo shirts will not be part of our uniform.   Currently, girls may wear navy blue skirts, no shorter than 2 inches above the knee, or grey, black or navy trousers, navy tights or white socks. Boys may wear grey, black or navy trousers. From September 2009 girls will still be able to wear navy skirts, however, grey trousers will not be part of the uniform for boys or girls.  Navy blue fleeces which have the school logo on are also recommended for the winter.   Children will also need a pair of shoes for school as trainers are not part of the school uniform. Next time you are shopping you may wish to take these changes into consideration to avoid additional expense nearer the time.

Christmas Bazaar – Saturday 22nd November 11.30-3.30pm
Amanda Apps would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated items for the hampers that will be raffled at the Christmas bazaar. If you would like to donate items Amanda will be happy to receive them next week.   Next Friday, 21st November, will be a non-uniform day to which your child is invited to dress down in exchange for items for the hamper. If you have not already brought them in, these items can be brought in on the day or anytime leading up till Friday. Alternatively you may like to donate bottles for the tombola instead, or cakes for the cakes stall.

We hope that you will be able to join us on the day and if you are able to spare an hour or two to help, Amanda would be most grateful if you could sign up on the board in the parent shelter.

We also need Christmas Trees to decorate Santa's Grotto too.  All of these items can be passed to Liz Sinker at school or at 3 Heathcote Place or to myself at school.

There will also be the opportunity for children to visit the Christmas Shop and buy Christmas gifts for members of their family, ranging from £1.50-£3.00. If you are unable to make the Christmas Fair, there will be a further opportunity for your child to buy gifts from the Christmas Shop at school between 1.15-3.15pm on Thursday 27th November, so please send your child in that day with money in a named envelope if they would like to buy from the Christmas Shop at school.

John Keble T-towel
Reminder: t-towels produced by the children of John Keble School to celebrate our school community are now on sale at the cost of £3.50 each or 3 for £10. The t-towel is on display on the Friends’ notice board and I am sure you will agree, would make a fantastic stocking filler for friends and family members. If you would like to purchase one or more, please complete the slip below and return it to the school in a sealed envelope with a cheque made payable to Friends of Hursley School. Please can you return any orders by Friday 14th November at the latest to ensure Christmas delivery.

Head Lice
There has recently been a reported case of head lice in class 3. We would be most grateful if everyone could please check their children’s hair to eradicate these nasty intruders.  If you require an information leaflet, please ask Mrs Brown for a copy.

School Library books
The School Library service will be visiting school towards the end of the month and we therefore need all school library books to be returned by Friday 21st November to be logged back so they can carry out a stock check.

Request for help from Mrs Hortin
In December we deliver a copy of the Parish Magazine to every house in the village, but this year we are short of volunteers to do the deliveries for us.  Can you spare a little time to help with this in your own area?  If you can offer help please contact Rita Hortin on 01962 775280. Thank you.

School Christmas Lunch
Christmas Lunch will be held on Tuesday 16th December. The meat option will be turkey, stuffing ball, mini sausage and gravy. If you think your child would like the vegetarian option, please can you tick the box at the end of the newsletter indicating whether your child would prefer quorn slice or red onion and cheese flan to be offered as the vegetarian option. Both meat and vegetarian options will be served with roast potatoes, peas and baton carrots and dessert will be toffee and vanilla parfait or Satsuma with Christmas biscuit.

Mrs Ralph will then decide from the replies which vegetarian option is the most popular and we will confirm the menu choice to you.
